Perceptual Fields: From Nauru to Nanaimo explores the numerous sensory fields existing within coastal ecosystems. The Island of Nauru and the coastal region of Nanaimo in Western Canada are located on opposite sides of the Pacific, but they each face vulnerabilities from sea rise, storm surges, and changing seasonal weather patterns.
Sylvia Grace Borda’s artwork responds to Pacific coastal shorelines as places of invisible stories made accessible through immersive photos, acoustic recordings, and text collected by the artist during field research. In this way, Perceptual Fields invites viewers to embark on a symbolic journey of observation between Nauru and Nanaimo, utilising the platform for experiencing and witnessing coastal climate narratives. Not least, it is also a reflection of our shared global ocean futures.
