Sylvia Grace Borda (Canada), Coastal Debris, 2026. Photography and text printed on vinyl, 70 x 50 cm.

Coastal debris and climate change are deeply linked. Climate change worsens the debris accumulation, particularly through storm surges resulting from warming oceans. Debris, in turn, contributes to rapid coastal erosion and hinders the resilience of the ecosystems. The photographic climate portraits by the artist document the climate challenges faced by a small Pacific island on Canada's west coast. The island faces climate change risks that affect the environment and connectivity to the well-being of a place, no matter how small, invisible, and far it might be. Art and observation make it visible through empowering voices that link to ones across the Pacific, building a sense of collective fate and awareness.
